Doing Online Collaborative Autoethnography During the Pandemic to Research Academic Precarity

14 June 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

led by Dr Claire Sedgwick and Dr Lito Tsitsou

This will be an interactive workshop that will explore the benefits of using an online collaborative autoethnographic approach to reflect on personal and shared experiences. Chang, Heewon et al (2012: 17) describe collaborative autoethnography as a ‘qualitative research method that is simultaneously collaborative, autobiographical and ethnographic’. In this workshop we will look at the practicalities of using such an approach online.

Pre-reading will be sent in advance.

Workshop Outline (subject to change)

1. Introductory Plenary (30 minutes)
In the introduction we will describe our own experiences of doing collaborative autoethnography online. We will begin by providing an overview of what collaborative autoethnography is and the theoretical underpinning of the approach. The structure of the plenary:

• What is collaborative auto-ethnography?
• How can you do CAE online?
• What research is suited to a CAE approach?
• What are the ethical considerations of doing a collaborative autoethnography online?
• What are the practical considerations of doing online CAE?

2. Interactive Activity (90 minutes)
In small groups decide on an idea for an online collaborative autoethnography. This may be linked to your research or may be something you’d never thought to do before. Activities will include:
i. Coming up with a research question:
• What kind of research is this suitable for?
• Suitability for PhD?

ii. Ethical consideration:
• The ethics of doing online collaborative autoethnography
• Will you need to apply for ethical approval?

BREAK

iii. How will you carry out the research? What platform will you use?
• Creating a protocol for collaboration.
• What are the practical considerations?

iv. Feedback on the method:
Padlet will be used for people to write up their discussion for some aspects and will present their ideas back to the group for others and using post-it notes. Claire and Lito will be able to provide advice and share their experience/ perspective.

3. Q&A/ Summary (30 minutes)
The session will end with time for questions and feedback on learning from the session. There will also be time for networking.
