Engaging Creatively with Research Participants Online

15 September 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

When fieldwork is unexpectedly cancelled or postponed, how can researchers build trust and engage with research participants in a positive, meaningful, and ethical manner? The aim of this workshop – which will be held online on Zoom – is to provide researchers with innovative and resourceful ideas on how to adapt traditional participatory research methods to an online environment in order to establish meaningful relationships within local communities.

By the end of the session, attendees should have:

1. Developed an understanding on the strengths and limitations of a range of ARB and PAR methods such as Fishbone, Photovoice & Guess Who Am I.
2. Gained further awareness and insight of the unique ethical challenges involved in conducting remote research;
3. Acquired knowledge on establishing relationships and building trust with local communities;
4. Learned how to apply flexibility and adaptability to their research methods.

PhD researchers from any social science background are warmly invited to register for this online event.  As this workshop involves a mix of informal presentations and small group work, participants must have access to a device with a stable Internet connection and a webcam/microphone. We also ask participants to prepare a personal Zoom account, paper, and writing utensils prior to the start of the event.
