Introduction to Institutional Ethnography and Its Application in Health-Related Research

IE approach is considered as an alternative sociology, a sociology from the standpoint of participants. The workshop will provide an overview of institutional ethnography, an approach to text analysis and mapping organisational or institutional processes. At the end of the workshop, participant will be able to understand the institutional ethnography and its application in health-related research. Dr Vikash Kumar (Queen Margaret University) will introduce institutional ethnography drawing on his PhD research experience about implementation of integrated health programmes from health workers’ standpoint.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the workshop each participant will:

  1. understand institutional ethnography as alternative sociological method (philosophical and theoretical underpinning)
  2. learn key concepts of institutional ethnography
  3. learn how to conceptualise IE project
  4. understand data collection, data analysis and report writing process for IE projects

10.30 am – 11.30 am – Overview of institutional ethnography
11.30 am – 12.15 pm – Case study and discussion –Implementation of integrated Health Programme in India
12.15 pm – 1.00 pm – Lunch Break
1.00 pm – 1.30 pm – Conceptualizing IE project
1.30 pm – 2.30 pm – Data collection and data analysis process
2.30 pm – 3.30 pm – Report writing and Limitation (with break)
3.30 pm – 4.00 pm – Feedback and Closing

Please note: this training is intended for Masters or PhD students who have completed qualitative research modules/courses at post graduate level.
