Spring into Methods: Building Authentic Case Studies

11 May 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12 May 2023 @ 4:00 pm

When embarking on case study-based research, many doctoral students settle on interviews as a method for data collection early on, with little rational or consideration to the practical and
philosophical underpinnings of case study design. Through experience, we have learned that your approach to interviews can either propel or limit the potential of your research and believe it is important you understand how to use these effectively.

This workshop will focus on the design of case study research, unpacking the importance of paradigmatic consistency and considering effective interview practice. Refining these skills as a doctoral student can ensure methodological rigour and lead to multiple top journal publications. Through a series of activities, you will explore the research logics underpinning case design;
implications of single and multiple case studies; setting boundaries between case and context; appropriate units of analysis; the heterogeneity of interviews; possibilities and pitfalls of using
multiple sources; and the importance of paradigmatic consistency between subject, theory, and method.

Participation in this workshop will provide you with the tools needed to build authentic case studies. Allowing you to move beyond a descriptive, and often shallow, account of what happened towards a logical inquiry that can claim a worthwhile contribution to knowledge. You will be supported by scholars who have published case study research and by the end of this event you will be able to design a case study relevant to your own research context, ensuring paradigmatic alignment, outline appropriate data collection methods, and identifying the complementarity between pluralistic approaches. We seek to shape this workshop based on students’ backgrounds and interests, providing a detailed cross- and inter-disciplinary understanding of the case study research method.
