Spring into Methods: Choreography as a method of inquiry: an arts-based approach to analyse moving data in qualitative research

17 May 2023 @ 10:00 am - 18 May 2023 @ 4:00 pm

Choreography as a Method of Inquiry focuses on the moving body as a source of data, an instrument for data analysis, and a medium for research communication in the humanities and social sciences. In this workshop, the facilitators will invite participants to look at their data with an embodied lens to create a choreography that helps them visualize and analyse their data in a dynamic way. Such choreography will become a coding system which will add a physical, visual, embodied, and visceral dimension to the data analysis.

The workshop introduces participants to four methods to analyse moving data by using the body, voice, space, and personal interaction as a medium to engage with research phenomena in the social sciences. The workshop has a theoretical and practical component including embodied group work, where participants are encouraged to develop ideas of how they could identify and use moving data in their own project, and how it might help them to communicate findings to audiences in accessible and engaging ways.

The workshop will involve bodily movement, but it is designed to be fully accessible and welcoming for people with impaired mobility (e.g. people using wheelchairs or walking assistance devices).
