led by Dr Yasaman Sarabi, Heriot-Watt University
In this session, we provide an introduction to Social Network Analysis. Social Network Analysis (SNA) investigates the relations among a certain group of entities. We will discuss what a social network is and why and when social network analysis can be used for research. We will also talk about the differences between qualitative and quantitative network data and various collection instruments and secondary resources. You will be introduced to some analytical tools as well, including centrality measures, network level metrics (i.e. density, centralisation), sub-group metrics, and modelling. We will also do a quick demonstration using a specialised network software, focusing primarily on how to visualise network data.
There are no prerequisites for attending this session. By the end of the session, you will have an overview of how to start conducting research with SNA as a method.
Please bring laptops (preferably fully charged). Please download the Visone software on your laptops prior to the session (https://visone.ethz.ch/).
