7 December 2022 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

This event aims to share the experiences of cross-countries data collection under the influence of Covid-19. Many aspects are involved, including fieldwork methods used by these two ongoing projects and challenges of data collection in terms of in-person fieldwork and online research.

Two students will provide the training event together on 7 December 2022, 9:30-12:30 pm, UK time, via Microsoft Teams. During the course, several interactive discussions will take place via online ‘breakout rooms’. The whole training event will not be recorded, but a short podcast will be created to make this event more widely available.

This event is separated into two parts. The first part focuses on an online questionnaire survey and interviews, covering relevant issues such as delivering gift vouchers, ethical issues, cooperating with language translators, ensuring anonymity, tolerance and actions for uncertainty. The second part discusses in-person data collection in terms of interviews and focus groups. Several aspects are involved, such as the necessity for in-person research, Covid-19 risk minimisation, detailed preparation, and challenges faced during in-person fieldwork.

This event hopes to share experiences of collecting oversea data through different techniques, aiming to provide constructive and insightful comments and recommendations for students interested in conducting overseas fieldwork.

On completion of this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Understand how other students manage to collect oversea data in-person and online.
  2. Understand some challenges, considerations, and experiences of conducting empirical studies with cross-countries’ participants.
  3. Reflect on and discuss about your fieldwork design.
