A Practical Overview of Systematic Reviews for the Social Sciences

July 11 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

let by Calum MacGillivray, PhD student at the University of Dundee

This workshop is an accessible introduction for those who would like to conduct or engage with systematic reviews. Participants will gain the confidence to engage with systematic reviews by building knowledge of the component parts of a systematic review, the decision-making process, and a hands-on opportunity to try out the methods.

The morning will begin with background discussing why systematic reviews are useful, defining terms and limitations and discussing broad applications. Next participants will be taken through common methods and the decision-making process when designing systematic reviews. After this, participants will be guided in the process of designing a replicable search, choosing appropriate databases and how to enter search strings. After a break for lunch participants will be given the opportunity to screen sources, then there will be a practical session using example coding sheets and critical appraisal tools. The last session will involve a discussion of narrative and quantitative synthesis techniques and considerations around disseminating findings.

Participants will be signposted to additional resources and there will be ongoing opportunities for discussion.

Participants will:

– Learn how to conduct high quality systematic reviews in the social sciences

– Build knowledge of various methods and tools available to support the process

– Gain practical skills in building a search, screening, coding and quality appraisal

– Be aware of different methods of synthesising findings (including meta-analysis and narrative synthesis) and how to interpret them
