Building Your Own Computational Workflow – A Course for Social Scientists

July 10 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

led by Eleni Omiridou, PhD student at the University of Glasgow

Develop ‘computational’ literacy and understanding of best practice in social science research. The training motivates the use of Nextflow, a workflow management software which enables the writing of scalable and reproducible scientific workflows. Join this half day software carpentry session to:

  • Understand the role of auxiliary tools (Docker/Git) in supporting best practice within the Open Research framework.
  • Design and adapt a research project directory to own research objectives.
  • Understand the fundamental components of a workflow implemented in Nextflow, including channels, processes and operators.
  • Learn-by-doing launch a computational workflow using remote workspace, GitPod.
  • Curate own configurations and settings on a practice workflow to ensure portability, scalability, automatic resource management and re-entrancy.
  • Discuss ways to implement own research directory.
  • Explore links to the wider network for computational researchers across Scotland.

This half day training is designed for postgraduate students/researchers/collaborative partners from any substantive social science background with an interest in computational research or large datasets.

No prior installation of software is required. Participants are encouraged to register for a GitHub account prior to attending training. Attendees with access to GitHub will be able to access an online teaching and learning workspace and follow along the guided practical component.

Who is this training for?

All doctoral or 1+3 students at Scottish institutions. This includes clinical doctorate or professional doctorate students. Masters level students can also attend where their studies aligns with the following challenge pathways: Communication, AI and Technologies and Health, Wellbeing and Communities. Collaborative partners with an interest in governance of informatics/infrastructure are also invited to take part.

Participants will be expected to bring their own devices to be able to follow hands-on training. All participants are required to set up an account with GitHub in advance of the session. Optionally, participants can choose to apply for a GitHub Education account, provided they have used their institutional email at the time of registering.

Accessibility information for the venue can be found here. Any additional accessibility needs should be noted in your registration form.
