Creative and Embodied Approaches to Trauma-Informed Research-ing: How to Bring the Body In?

June 30 @ 10:00 am - July 1 @ 1:30 pm

led by Anna Bovo and Valeria Lembo, University of Edinburgh

Please note this session is on 30 June and 1 July from 10am – 1.30pm each day, and students are attended to expect both sessions

Anna is a multidisciplinary researcher, nurse, and somatic therapist working in the health sector, exploring mind-body dynamics in high-intensity care contexts. Valeria is a dementia practitioner and researcher trained as a social anthropologist, with a particular focus on embodiment and the intersections of art and academic practices. We offer a two-half-day training to explore creative and embodied approaches to trauma-informed research in an online space where you can engage with the material at your own pace. Our goal is to connect with PhD students and early-career researchers across Scotland, fostering a network of like-minded individuals interested in embodied and unconventional research creation and design. Through this training, you will learn to approach your research from a bodily perspective, considering the role of the body in engaging with data, materials, and readings. We will provide lecture-based content alongside breakout rooms and experiential exercises to help you embody research and the process of being with it. This learning opportunity is ideal for creative minds, qualitative researchers, and those working within post-humanist frameworks. Students at any stage of their studies are welcome—whether or not you have completed fieldwork or data collection. You can join as you are, wherever you are in your research journey and becoming.

Format: two half-days online, lecture-based content on embodiment and trauma-informed approaches, break-out rooms with experientials and discussions

Learning Outcomes:

  • to understand trauma-informed approaches and their role in research.
  • to explore creative and embodied research methods.
  • to apply mind-body awareness when engaging with data and materials.
  • to participate in experiential exercises to deepen learning.
  • to connect with researchers interested in innovative methods.

This training is ideal for creative minds, qualitative researchers, and those working within post-humanist frameworks. Students at any stage of their studies are welcome—whether or not you have completed fieldwork or data collection. You can join as you are, wherever you are in your research journey and becoming. We will provide you with reading and video-materials to engage with ahead of class. Also, bring along bits and pieces, drafts and ‘messiness’ you might have based on your research stage to help you…

  • Think/feel about your Research Questions and gap: For 1st year PhDs
  • Think/feel about your fieldwork: For 2nd year PhDs
  • Think/feel your analysis and meaning-making: For 3rd year PhDs and beyond
