Summer School 2025: Ethnography: An introductory workshop

June 18 @ 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Led by Dr Bridget Bradley, University of St Andrews

In this workshop you will gain a detailed introduction to ethnography from a trained anthropologist who has been doing multi-sited fieldwork across the UK for over 10 years. This session will include dynamic, practical activities as a way to explore key ethnographic methods including participant observation and informal interviewing. We will examine the practice of writing and unpacking fieldnotes, as a useful process of data collection, reflection, and analysis. A brief history of ethnography will open up a discussion about how ethnography as changed in recent years, and the efforts to decolonise research in the social science. You will be asked to consider some of the ways that you might embrace methodologies that are inclusive, ethical and find ways to collaborate with your research communities to build meaningful impact.
