Hands-on training to use NVivo for efficient ‘reading’ & data analysis

14 August 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 15 August 2023 @ 5:00 pm

Led by Shrikant Wad, PhD student at the University of Edinburgh

NVivo is often seen as a specialist tool meant exclusively for advanced qualitative researchers, but it is not so! The software can be used for a variety of research projects ranging from postgraduate-level essays to large-scale mixed methods studies. It is available in almost all Scottish universities (and many research organisations worldwide). If you have never used NVivo (or any such tool), this workshop is for you!

This is a two-day online workshop; participation on second day is optional. This workshop will not be recorded.

 Day One: 14 August 2023, 2pm to 5pm

We will install NVivo and navigate through its key features. We will load sample data into the software and find intelligent ways to analyse it. We will expand this exercise to understand how NVivo can be used for thematic analysis, research-backed writing, or just focused reading.

 Day Two: 15 August 2023, 2pm to 4pm

Practice session. Please bring your own data / academic or policy literature / course material. Alternatively, you may request the course organiser for sample data. We will focus on specific research objectives and how to address them through analysis. We will learn how the tables and patterns in NVivo can help us produce cogent and coherent research outputs.

Pre-requisites:

  1. Graduate-level training in research methods, preferably in social science.
  1. A computer with Microsoft Teams and NVivo. Please contact your school for information related to the software licence and terms of use. If you are using a computer provided by the university, it may come pre-installed with the software.
