Corpus analytical software are versatile tools that provide users with an easy-to-use means for analysing and visualising qualitative and quantitative data. However, since Corpus Linguistics has been largely presented as a quantitative method of analysis, using corpus tools may at times appear daunting for researchers who are apprehensive about using software which rely heavily on statistical measures for analysis.
This two-part session aims to address this misconception about using corpus tools by, first, presenting an overview of Corpus Linguistics and its applications in social sciences. After this introduction to Corpus Linguistics, the second section of this session will provide participants with the opportunity to practice working with corpus tools. By the end of this session, participants will have become familiar with the key resources and key concepts for working with corpus tools. Participants will have also gained the basic necessary skills required to use corpus tools for their individual research.
