Led by Scott Oatley, PhD student at the University of Edinburgh
This training will focus on setting up Jupyter Notebook on individual devices and importing the user’s data analysis software of choice (course taught in Stata) into the Notebook environment. After setup is complete, training will focus on establishing the various tools that Jupyter Notebook has to offer; demonstrating how Jupyter goes beyond the clunky and sometimes dysfunctional .do files of Stata and other software providers. By the end of the session individuals will walk away knowing how to create a sophisticated and streamlined workflow for all future projects/thesis work whereby data analysis, visualization, comments, write-up reports, and references can all be integrated into one workflow. This training is of particular use to quantitative researchers that seek to adopt open science practices.
Whilst the training course will be taught using Stata, Jupyter Notebook accommodates virtually all software packages.
The training session will be held in the Practice Suite of the Chrystal Macmillan Building in George Square, Edinburgh. The schedule for the day is as follows:
10:30am -11:00am – Pre-training welcome
11:00 am -12:00am – Session 1
12:00 – 13:00 – Lunch
13:00 – 14:00 – Session 2
14:00 – 14:20 – Coffee Break
14:20 – 15:20 – Session 3
15:20 – 15:40 – Coffee Break
15:40 – 16:40 – Session 4
16:40-17:00 – Q&A + Wrap Up
Who is this for?
Some knowledge of quantitative research is required, and knowledge of relevant software like Stata. Beyond that, this is a great course for those just starting out or for those wishing to produce a more efficient workflow for future projects. The only requirement is that you must bring your own machine to the training session, as access to Jupyter Notebook cannot be granted via university-owned computers.
