Listening to Children’s Voices in Research: Applying Lundy’s model into practice

August 27 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

led by Stella Gkegka, PhD student at the University of Strathclyde

The inclusion of children’s voices in decision-making processes has received increasing attention since the ratification of the UNCRC. Research inspired by Article 12, which gives children the right to have their views heard and acted upon, aims to reposition children from silent and passive recipients to agents of change. This workshop will draw on Lundy’s model of children’s participation to explore how to effectively involve children in research. The factors of space, voice, audience, and influence of Lundy’s model will be introduced, and attendees will explore these concepts in their own research context. Participants will be invited to engage in group discussions to reflect on concepts including positionality, reflexivity, communication extending beyond spoken words, and silence. The organiser will share how she applied Lundy’s model in practice to design with autistic students a Physical Activity (PA) programme accommodating their interests and needs. She will also share how the use of participatory methods, such as walking interviews and LEGO® building, encouraged children’s involvement in shaping their school experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to use LEGO® building in practice to reflect on the ethical dilemmas and challenges encountered when listening to children’s voices.

This event will take place at the Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC), at the University of Strathclyde, on 27th August 2025. The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm, including a lunch break. Attendees can explore catering options within and around the University (lunch will not be provided).

Accessibility information for the venue can be found here. Any additional accessibility needs should be noted in your registration form.
