Multimodal Photovoice and Co-Analysis with Young People

26 February 2025 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm

led by Elisabeth Davies, PhD student at the University of the West of Scotland

This half day session aims to introduce PGRs to the multimodal possibilities of Photovoice as both method and methodology. Typically, art-based approaches have been employed in research of a sensitive nature, providing what can be a cathartic and supportive research experience for those whose voices have been marginalised or may have experienced victimisation or trauma.

No prior training or learning is necessary, and all resources will be provided. This introductory session to Photovoice and arts-based approaches aims to engage those with an interest in the field as well as provide insights through lived experience of employing a multimodal Photovoice approach in PhD research with young people.

The first half of the morning will provide attendees with an overview of Photovoice and explore the incorporation of other arts-based methods in the data creation process. A hands-on analysis experience will be hosted in the second half of the session, giving those in attendance the  opportunity to cut, stick, manipulate, annotate, doodle, question and pick apart tangible data in small collaborative groups. Collaborative analysis with be undertaken using the Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis approach.

Attendees will gain an overview of Photovoice methodology and the inclusion of further arts-based methods, gain experience in hands on co-analysis of multi modal data through Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis and an understanding of how co-research can facilitate a more inclusive, participant centered approach to qualitative research.

This event will be of particular interest to students engaging with or interested in arts-based research methods.

The room provided is an accessible space and can be accessed via the ground floor.
