led by Sophia Georgescu, PhD student at the University of Stirling, and Julia Römer, PhD student at Glasgow School of Art
In troubled times, including social and ecological crises, ongoing research shows that generations are increasingly growing apart and in conflict. In formal education and beyond, adult practitioners report low confidence in their practice, and children and young people share feelings of low trust in older generations. Despite pushing methodological boundaries to address this divide, creative and participatory research practices also reproduce it. This peer-to-peer training will explore these, with a particular focus on participatory sense-making through, for, and as co-analysis with children and young people. We will share our PhD research and project experiences involving multiple ages and generations to make decisions on sustainable futures.
Attendees will explore the tensions and opportunities of this kind of research by gaining hands-on experience with co-analysis approaches. These include visual and situational mapping approaches to support participatory sense-making in the room. Discussions will also include case study presentations, leading into an exploration of intergenerational co-analysis methods not just between children and adults, but also PhD researchers, children, and adults as distinct generations. We seek to develop the confidence of attendees as situated in their age-based positionalities as doctoral researchers which is often missing. This training provides a much-needed space for informal exchange of methodological discussions as this often falls short in PhD training.
This training is open to all PhD students from SGSSS institutions interested in or working with creative and participatory research methodologies from any interdisciplinary angle. Familiarity with participatory and creative research would be beneficial for attendees but not a requirement.
Attendees can explore catering options within and around campus. While snacks and coffee/tea will be provided, lunch will not be included.
