led by Dr Roxanne Connelly, SGSSS
This series of sessions is developed for SGSSS-funded students in the first year of their PhD. It will introduce you to essential areas of knowledge and skills for contemporary social science researchers, equipping you with a strong foundation for a successful PhD. It covers core project management aspects, research integrity and ethics, communication and engagement strategies as well as emerging areas like use of generative AI.
As social scientists we aim to influence social policy, to improve people’s lives and to build better societies, but we are increasingly recognising that the way we do social science research may have unintended consequences and negative outcomes. There is increasing concern about the transparency of research and the problems this might lead to. This workshop will introduce you to the arguments for why we need to improve our research practices in social science, and you will be introduced to some approaches which will improve the transparency of your research.
