Practicum – Adapting Critical Discourse Analysis Approaches for Interdisciplinary Doctoral Research Projects

14 November 2023 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Led by Laura Weiner and Mariel Deluna, PhD students at the University of Edinburgh

Critical Discourse Analysis is increasingly of interest to doctoral students across the social sciences; however, there is a distinct gap between CDA scholars and spaces where PhD students learn to adapt these methods into their research. This advanced training provides this space where doctoral students can learn about CDA and consider the practicalities of using such approaches in their research.

The training follows on from a half day on 13 November, 2023. Attendees signed on for this additional advanced practicum lab will work on adapting their CDA into their methodologies for their PhD research, supported by peer groups and the facilitators.

The learning outcome for this session is to gain experience using CDA with collected data and addressing specific issues or gaps related to CDA usage in the PhD.

This is the second half-day of Critical Discourse Analysis training. Attendees should first attend the half-day training on 13 November, 2023.  You can sign up for that session here.

Who is this for?

This session is a practical session for PhD students in their second or third year who have some data they can bring to the practicum (in data collection stages or beyond). They should also have some previous knowledge of CDA, which can be from the half day training on 13 November, and an interest in applying it to their PhD studies.
