Spring into Methods: How to tackle multiple research agendas using ethnographic methods

22 May 2023 @ 9:00 am - 24 May 2023 @ 5:00 pm

This workshop is particularly useful for research students who are interested in how humans engage in traditional and digital social settings.

This interactive workshop will introduce you to various ways in which ethnography can help explore social interactions in social/cultural settings. You will learn how ethnographic methods can be applied as creative and multi-dimensional methods to explore human interactions in various social contexts in both the natural and digital worlds.

You will learn the principles and practices of ethnography, autoethnography, and netnography/digital ethnography. We will demonstrate how these methods can be applied through the following techniques: participant observation, field notes, informal dialogues, interviews, document analysis, visual methods, digital observation, and dialogues.

Each of these will be taught by a group of researchers who have applied various ethnographic methods to explore diverse social contexts. We will explore the various opportunities and nuances, using theories, examples, and best practice from our own research experiences. This will allow students to understand the benefits and pitfalls of ethnographic research methods.

No prior learning is required, however some essential understanding of qualitative research methods would be beneficial.

In this course, students will:

  • Gain understandings of ethnography as a multi-dimensional research technique and demystify its meaning;
  • Learn about ethnographic procedures using examples from digital ethnography (netnography) and autoethnography;
  • Prepare research designs for ethnographic research based on research problems that participants will identify;
  • Acquire skills in writing about, and publishing, ethnographic research.

After this course, students should be able to:

  • LO1: Define the goals and objectives of ethnographic research;
  • LO2: Distinguish between different ethnographic approaches;
  • LO3: Apply the concepts of ethnography, netnography, and autoethnography to their own research contexts;
  • LO4: Appreciate the strengths and limits of ethnographic approaches.

This is a three-day course, with day one taking place online. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for the face-to-face components on days 2 and 3.

Please note, this event is now open for registration. When you complete your registration form, please select ‘Yes, I have been invited to register’ when prompted.
