Summer School 2024: Using Nvivo to Analyse Qualitative Data for Complete Beginners

June 6 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

led by Dr Katy Keenan and Dr Kathryn Fredricks

This course is aimed at those who have minimal experience either with qualitative research or in using the software Nvivo. It is also suitable for those who have used Nvivo before but would like a refresher. It combines well with ‘intro to qualitative research’ sessions, and you can move onto the more advanced afternoon Nvivo session with Dr. Alasdair Stewart. The format will be a guided lab session interspersed with explanatory lab material.

The topics covered are:

  • What is qualitative data and how is it generated?
  • The process of transcription and data management
  • Overview of the software Nvivo
  • Importing and managing data in Nvivo
  • Annotating and coding
  • Attaching biographical data
  • Querying data

Example data will be provided; but you are also welcome to use your own work to practise with. If you wish to do this, you will have to access it via cloud-based email or storage – you will not be permitted to use a USB stick in University of Dundee computer labs.
