Led by Sidonie Ecochard and Laura Manderson, PhD students at the University of Strathclyde
The event aims to support postgraduate research students’ overall sense of wellbeing in navigating the emotional terrain of postgraduate studies. Sidonie and Laura, as experienced mindfulness practitioners and certified yoga teachers, will lead an exploration into the emotional dimensions of postgraduate studies, and common challenges such as writer’s block, procrastination, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome.
The event will open a space for students to come together, practice mindfulness and share stories and experiences. Participation will also include discussions of academic texts related to mindfulness in the field, small group discussions, and practical tools to increase mindfulness and ease emotional discomfort. As part of the event, there will be the opportunity for attendees to go on a short walk, although an alternative activity has been planned for those for whom it is not a suitable activity.
The workshop will take place at the University of Strathclyde, on 21st July 2023. The event will start at 11 am (participants are encouraged to come from 10:30am and settle in if possible) and finish at 5 pm. There will be a lunch break, but lunch will not be provided (there are plenty of catering options within the university building). This event is open to doctoral students from all social science backgrounds. No prior knowledge of meditation or mindfulness is required to attend. Wearing comfortable clothing is also advised.
