led by Nishat Tasneem, PhD student at the University of Edinburgh
The hands-on training event will explore qualitative research processes that combine narrative inquiry (the study of stories and lived experiences) with artistic expressions (visual arts, poetry, and/or performance) to explore, represent, and interpret human experiences. This approach values creativity, subjectivity, and multiple ways of knowing, making it particularly useful for studying complex, emotional, or marginalised perspectives. Arts-based narrative approach can help to enhance engagement and participation, promote reflexivity and critical thinking, and innovate creative ways of disseminating findings and impact. This creative approach is particularly useful when working with vulnerable individuals and communities in studying identity, memory, or cultural experiences.
The training will include storytelling regarding how our personal and professional selves are shaped and reshaped by lived experiences around intersectionality, multiple identities, and social inequalities. This will also explore hands-on training for incorporating arts-based practices, including participatory mapping, clay work, and creative journaling, to capture the complex dynamics and nuances of these stories. Thus, helping participants gain a deeper understanding of their own and others’ stories. The workshop would be of particular interest to students and researchers who would like to learn and use arts-based narrative approaches in their research or practices.
This event will take place at the University of Edinburgh on the 15th of July 2025. The workshop will run from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, including a lunch break. Attendees can explore catering options within and around the University building (lunch will not be provided).
There is no prerequisite in terms of training for the attendees.
